RJ and I did the snorkel trip to Looe Key. What a super fun trip!! James the captain and his 1st mate Katie were great, and gave us all the info we needed on the way out. We saw dolphins on the ride there, and when we got to the reef, James said he would give us our money back if we didn't see a fish. I saw fish before I even jumped in! It's like swimming in a fish bowl!! We saw thousands of fish, a sting ray, and 2 black tip sharks. The large one swam under me and it was so beautiful! At the 2nd snorkel spot, RJ and I swam out to the buoy that marked the channel. On the way back, another boat whistled to get my attention, and asked me if I saw the goliath grouper under their boat. I swam over to the boat and could not believe my eyes. I couldn't believe he was real, he was 6ft long and 650lbs!! He swam right up to my face and cocked his head like he was a dog that wanted me to pet him!! It was so mind blowing to be in the water with him! RJ had already swam too far past to come back, I wish he could have seen it. And this is exactly why I need a Go-Pro!! On the way back in, we got complimentary drink tickets for the Tiki Bar...yes please!! I would definitely do this trip again!!

I stayed at this resort for 2 weeks, I wanted a place with night life, somewhere I could grab something quick to eat and yet close to Key West. All the staff were excellent, if you act like a butt head then expect the service to be reflective . The bands each night were pretty good and the gals on the dance floor were pretty good too. Food was good, drinks were good but yes the service was a little slow because they only had one bartender and she was running to keep up, the place was packed almost every night. If you want top of the line rooms, then go pay $250 a night in Key West. If you need some place to crash as you party along on your vacation, then this is the place to play and stay. Pool was always nice and clean and so were the grounds. The Captain on the boat was named James and he was so very helpful the entire time we were on the boat. All in all, it's just what I wanted and got. If your too old, snoby or just a pain in the butt, please go somewhere else so you don't spoil my vacation the next time I stay there with your bad attatude.

The Looe Key reef itself was very, very cool. The rays and sharks I saw are the only reasons this place gets more than one star. The "resort" was filthy. If the food had been free, I still would not have eaten it. The snorkeling tour was just awful. Our "guides" clearly wanted to operate a party boat, rather than a professional diving/snorkeling boat. As a result, I had some real concerns about going into the water: serving beer and margaritas to snorkelers in the open ocean was a pretty big red flag; giving them "pool noodles" rather than proper flotation vests was another. One of our guides was much more interested in flexing for various girls in bikinis, rather than watching the clearly inexperienced snorkelers in the water. I'm somewhat amazed that profuse vomiting was the worst thing that happened to anyone--but given the amount of alcohol served, the vomiting itself didn't surprise me at all. There was absolutely no dress code on the boat. The profound abundance of ass crack on board probably did not help the profound abundance of nausea and vomiting among the passengers. I would not recommend this tour to children, or anyone else with eyes. The party boat also ruined much of the snorkeling itself. I explained several times that the yelling and squealing coming from our group was scaring away all of the fish we'd come to see--but it's very difficult to reason with drunk people. By the end of our tour, the only fish remaining were the ones eating the vomit that kept falling off the boat.

I'm giving Looe Key Resort and Dive Center 5 stars based on their resort (motel) and diving trip. Granted, its not a 5-star "resort" but you're also not paying top dollar prices. I recently stayed there and they had hands-down the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on in a motel. (Their staff said they had just been replaced.) It wasn't too firm and not springy at all. We had been booked for the tiniest room, but they upgraded us for free because no one was in the bigger room, and we were staying for more than one night. So needless to say, the staff was very nice. We also went on a diving trip with them and they were super fun: making margaritas on the way in. They helped us with our dive gear and everything, since we are newbies to diving. The tiki bar was a fun place to hang out after diving as well. I think a lot of locals hang out there, so it could be a good place to go if you want to meet people as well. So to sum it up, this place is a great place to stay at if you are on a budget and/or don't need anything fancy. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again and go diving with them again if we ever head back to the Keys!

Love this place to snorkel and dive. Come every trip, got our dive certification here. The snorkel boat is safe and fun and hanging in the tiki bar for the comp drinks is always fun.

Just Don't! I had a business trip in the Keys and my partner failed to book us a hotel, thinking we would just find one on the way through. We ended up stopping here out of lack of options. First, the office is in a run down shack with very limited parking. "Overflow" parking is next door in a gravel lot. Second, when we entered the room, the first thing I noticed was large black X's on the walls that had been attempted to be painted over. The comforters looked 20 years old, faded, and had holes in them. When I pulled back the blanket, the pillows had hair on them. And I found more hair in the sheets, along with what looked like a iron burn mark. The towels in the bathroom had small stains. We complained the next morning about the room being dirty so they moved us to another room. Same story, hair in the sheets, faded comforters. The bathroom had a black plastic piece over what was supposed to be an outlet. It looked like they had tried to upgrade the showers but the rest of the room but seriously dated. The tiki bar is exactly what that other reviewer said, a roadside bar for bikers and they kept me up all night with people reving up their motorcycles and shouting at each other. When we were checking out, I noticed the house keeps plling an iron trailer with towels and sheets in it. I watched as one of them pulled leaves and other trash out of it. No wonder the rooms are so dirty. I also saw their washer, which was held shut by blue painters tape. Just keep on driving...

This is very odd, but I concur with the other reviewer. This is a sad attempt at a dive center. There web presence far exceeds there "resort" presence as it is an old run down motel. It was obvious the crew was miserable with there job. The captain spent the entire load in time complaining about his job issues with the mate and on site he was sarcastic, saying over and over how you had to be back on the boat in one hour. I understand the importance of the hour, but don't be so hateful. When some kids got confused on the count in, he popped off "your taking your time, not mine, lets try it again." The guys kids were under twelve, so captain please chill. It is possible to BE SAFE AND CHEERFUL. If you don't like your job please quit. I am not unreasonable and I am happy with the larger dive boats, but this one did not meet acceptable limits of average service. The upsides were that the boat was a newer catamaran and the reef was beautiful, but the service was so poor it detracted from everything. Compared to other area dive shops the price was average, service poor and pound for pound, Strike Zone Dive Charter was the better trip for my family. Sorry for the bad review, I don't give them out often.

I took the PADI open-water scuba diving class! Our instructor was Renee and she was amazing! I highly recommend this dive center!

The key feature of this place is how it offers a sort of one-stop shop for learning how to dive. I took my young son over the holidays, and we spent five days working through the classwork, pool work, and open water dives. During the pool classes, the pool was rather cool, and my son was shivering even though in a wet suit. The advantage: our instructor, Kurt, patiently waited while we ran ten paces to our room, took hot showers, and ran back for more. There is no better place to learn to dive. They can teach, they know the waters, they are fun people in a laid-back environment that, as many who know the Keys can attest, go out of the way to make sure you are happy to be there. Also: very happy with the Wifi - better than at more so-called "elite" locales. Why not 5 stars? Well, the pool should be heated in the winter. The Tiki bar is a bit loud, though it shuts down the music at a reasonable hour. They work hard here, we have no regrets.

Trying to decide a star rating was difficult; great dives but mixed feelings about the "cattle" boat aspect; (my mother and I's fond term for boats packed with more than 20 people). "Marathon" diving is the phrase that comes to mind here. It all felt very rushed. We were allowed an hour at each site (and I use the word site very loosely as when you change sites the boat only moves about 50 yards to the next mooring ball). Your hour begins before you get off the boat so you feel rather rushed to get set and off of the boat; my bottom times averaged about 45 mins each dive and kept coming up with about 1500 in my tank due to the shallow depth. Would have enjoyed more time. I found the crew to be very helpful and courteous, they'll make sure you get off and back on safely. Pros: Cheap for a three tank dive (about $70, and yes weights are included) Looe Key is an AWESOME site with tons of sharks, rays, morays, cuda, coral life, fish, etc. Saw at least one shark on every dive. Cons: Packed boat with about 46 people Rushed diving experience (at least the getting in/setting up part) I was inclined to rate 3 stars HOWEVER they cannot really help the "rushed" aspect of their operation due to low tide in the canal where they dock their boat. They must keep a tight schedule lest they are trapped out in the channel waiting 3 hours for high tide. I would do it again and recommend it to others who really want to experience Looe Key.

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! We had such a bad experience that we ended up cancelling our dive trip the next morning because we go no sleep at all. On a recent trip down to the keys we booked a dive with Looe Key; being that they have a hotel/resort we decided it was the most convenient place to stay. Boy, were we in for a treat; I love scary movies but it seems my better half does not, she was scared $hitless... and she comes from a third world country! The loud mayhem (music) stopped at about midnight and by the time the bikers roared their engines and left it was closer to 1am. We were happy, finally about to get some sleep, hmmm Methinks not; that's when the fighting and screaming began, then the sound of bottles being broken and around 3:30am knocking on our windows, not regular knocking either, the creepy kind of knocking with just the nails. I kid you not, I would not bestow this experience on my worst of enemies, stay away, far far away unless your carrying a weapon, and even in that case, make sure you got one in each hand and at least an eye open at all times. We got out of the bed the next morning, (cant say woke up, since we never fell asleep), paid and got the hell out of dodge, I mean Looe Key.

It was like stopping at a hill-billy tiki bar. The food was actually really good and the drinks were alright as well. The waitress was funny and social. As some of the places to stop and eat become more and more spread out, this one should not be over looked based on looks. Note, the directions for this place seem to want you to make a turn on a side road but the place is actually facing the road so just pull into the parking lot.

I am reviewing this company for the snorkeling experience. I cannot rate it as a diver or as a customer that has stayed in the hotel. I thought it was fantastic. I recently went to Pennekamp for snorkeling and raved about my experience there...one reviewer of Looe Key called this a cattle boat. If you want a cattling experience, then go to Pennekamp. Here, however, it was so calm, relaxing, and just peaceful. We checked in and were fitted for our gear, then ushered back to the boat. We were allowed to wait on the boat until 10 a.m., the starting time. At Pennekamp it was a mad house trying to secure a spot in line and then on the boat. Also, we were given one hour each in three different coral locations (within the same reef). At Pennekamp I paid $67 for one hour PERIOD at one location. It's $44 here for a total of 3 hours, snorkeling. The staff was so friendly and cool and helpful. They were great. On the boat, during the lunch hour, they grilled up sloppy joes and turkey dogs for $3-$4. It was an incredible atmosphere. I only snorkeled in one area because with the wind I got too cold to convince myself to get back it. Instead I laid on the boat and chatted with other divers and the crew. I would say it was worth every penny and every minute because in the end I still spent less than at Pennekamp and still got at minimum (for me) an hour of snorkeling. Not to mention they gave us a voucher for a drink at the tiki bar afterward...and the previous reviewer was right about that. Less so a tiki bar as a hang out for bikers and chain-smokers. But free drinks?! The reef is beautiful, too.

You really have to consider the price when you stay here. It is exactly worth what you pay. So, expect tile floors, no laundry, iron/ironing board, small fridge, basic TV, and a hard bed but not in a good way. I have stayed here three times and I am very satisfied. The tiki bar is great fun and good food. Just manage your expectations for a 95 a night spot and you will be golden.

Had a great time today on our snorkel trip to the Looe keys. Great value and a good time. They gave us plenty of time to explore 3 different areas of the Looe key coral reef. I'm not an experience swimmer or snorkeler but I felt very safe under the guideance of the crew. The reef was beautiful. Saw lots of fish and some sharks. Bring a underwater camera. Would definitely go back.

We snorkeled with the Looe Key Reef Dive Shop. It was a very enjoyable trip. The crew was fun, friendly and very professional. They followed all the safety protocol that you expect on a dive trip. We spent an hour at each of two sites and the reefs were amazing. We also stayed in the Looe Key Reef Resort. We are typically Hampton Inn or something similar kind of travelers. This is not that but it was half the price of anything else I saw and we were steps away from the dive shop. The room is plain but clean enough. Comfortable bed and nice cold air conditioning. They also had the best wifi we have ever had at a hotel.

I want to express my recent disappointment in the changes that took place at Looe Key Resort. As someone who has lived in the neighborhood next to the resort for a while it is concerning how the recent changes are disrupting the close neighborly relationship. Many of the neighbors have been strong supporters of the establishment from noise issues coming from the Tiki, mangroves in the canal, finding additional easier ways for the dive boat to move through the canal system, to simply patronizing the local establishment. One nice reciprocal benefits for some of the inconveniences placed on the neighborhood is an easy to use local boat ramp. This past weekend (in fact on locals appreciation day) i was informed that to use the ramp now it is $85.00 for the year ( or 10.50 each time - it was 10.50 for the year previously). To add insult to injury the employees behind the counter workers were incredibly rude when I asked a few questions. It is the little things that keep the neighborhood and the resort working together. I applaud all of the improvements you have made to the hotel rooms, bathrooms, expanded tiki, but just don't forget you are also part of the neighborhood community.

The night staff, an older gentleman at the shop was very friendly and helpful. He gave us a night for free because we had requested 2 double beds but there was only rooms with one bed. Can't complain about that. The hotel is only about 35 min from key west. The only complaint I have is that it can get noisy at night due to the bar next door, but at least the live band is pretty good. If you can't beat em, join em. Also, the morning staff was a little rude to us. Be prepared to be rushed promptly at check out time.

I did not stay on the property so I can't comment on the resort itself, but my boyfriend and I just took a snorkel tour today and had a wonderful time! We love to snorkel and were very excited to get out on the water. I saw another review here that complained about a "party boat" atmosphere, but that was not our experience at all. In fact, there was no alcohol on our boat at all, just complimentary soft drinks and water, which was great. We were interested in snorkeling, not drinking, so this suited us perfectly. We chose to book the smaller boat, which only carries 6 people, and it was well worth the extra $10 per person. It was just me and my boyfriend plus a nice Swiss family of 4. Captain Ron was extremely professional but also warm and friendly. The reef was beautiful and the day was perfect for snorkeling. It couldn't have been better! The only reason I didn't give five stars is because the people working at the desk were a bit disorganized. We had a reservation but they didn't seem to know who we were and they did not do a good job telling us where to go, who our captain was, etc., so we wandered confused for a bit. Once we got on the boat with captain Ron, though, everything was great. :)

I hate to give bad reviews, but I felt like I had to to warn off others. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and wanted to go snorkeling. He used to snorkel a lot years ago, and had actually been to Looe Key reef and loved it. We found this company and booked. It had been really windy and there had been a small craft advisory all week, but we weren't sure how bad it was since we hadn't been out there. it was our naivete, but the company 100% took advantage of that (and the naivete of all of the other passengers). We called ahead that day and the woman on the other end of the line told us there were definitely swells but to take some dramamine and it should be fine, and that the visibility was about 35 feet. The 3-5 foot swells made for an incredibly horrible experience at the reef. We tried snorkeling at the first location but the swells were so bad that my husband's neck problem prevented us from staying in the water longer than 2 minutes. Not their fault, but the visibility was so NOT even close to 35 feet. I get motion sick and spent part of the trip throwing up, along with 5-7 or so other poor passengers. No one that I saw had a good experience. The only thing good I can say is that the captain and other staff were really nice and accommodating. They obviously knew it wasn't a good idea to be out there (not one other company was out at the reef that day!) but their hands were tied, since this company just seemed to want to make money even though the experience wouldn't be good for people.

Best snorkel trip in the keys hands down. Captain and mate were friendly and helpful; we saw several sharks, big cudas, parrotfish, and many other species. Hands down worth the drive down from largo. There is no comparison between this reef and pennycamp tours. Highly recommended!

I took the PADI Discover SCUBA course with Kurt, who was an awesome instructor. Went on two dives on the boat later, and had an awesome time. I saw a shark! And two rays! And an eel! And a lionfish (frowny face)! If I ever get open-water certified, this is where I'll go. A little pricier than some of the places in Key West, but word is Looe Key is one of the best reefs in North America.
